Pysanky -  Ukrainian egg decorating.   Linda Hupert,  an internationally known artist, will teach us the art of Ukrainian egg decorating.  Her eggs are beautiful.  Check out her website at www.planetegg.com.

 "The art of Pysanky is an ancient art done by writing with beeswax on eggs.  The word Pysanka comes from the Ukrainian word pysaty which means to write.  The eggs are not painted but written with a stylus filled with beeswax then heated over a flame. The egg is then dipped into the lightest color, usually yellow, and more wax is written on to continue creating the design. The next step, the egg goes into the orange dye, and more wax is written, then dipped into red, and again, wax is written on the parts to be red.  The final color is black.  Once the egg is dyed black, the egg is then ready to have all that wax melted off. The beauty of the design appears once the wax is completely melted off.

My name is Linda Lishchuk Hupert.  I have been decorating Pysanky for over 50 years.  I’ve been to festivals all over the East Coast and Michigan and Pennsylvania with my eggs.  I was a Guest Artist for 8 years at Walt Disney World Epcot Center for various Festivals they have there.  I have taught classes throughout Northern Ohio, and have been affiliated with the Cleveland Museum of Art in their Distance Learning Program. "

I will be demonstrating the process of writing a Pysanka, and also, showing examples of different eggs and explaining the various symbols.  This is a program the children and adults of all ages will enjoy.  Right now, writing Pysanky has a very special meaning because with each Pysanky written a prayer is said for Peace in Ukraine.

March 26 – Welcome back – show and tell, Pangrams.

Mike Gold will present “The Art of Flourishing”December 4, 2022 (STRONGSVILLE LIBRARY, 18700 Westwood Dr.)

PROGRAM:

Flourish comes from the Latin verb “florare,” which means to bloom. That’s what flourishing does for a lettering design. Flourishes are strokes and decorative lines and elements in and around letters that allow your lettering to blossom and have that extra pizzazz. There are a number of good guidelines to follow when flourishing and we will cover them. But flourishing is an art and your vision and creativity isn’t limited by rules.

 There is plenty to be said about flourishing letters or flourishing a line of text, but for this program, most of our time will be spent examining some flourishing possibilities around lettering. There will be an opportunity for hands on practice or you can just watch the demonstrations. You will come away with some useful handouts and hopefully some ideas on how to add drama to your next envelope or artwork. Hopefully, my examples below will give you an idea of what I mean when I say flourishing “around” lettering.

 Supply List

  • ·         Pencil
  • ·         Pointed felt tip black pen (I like the Pentel Touch Sign Pen)
  • ·         Broad edge dual tip markers (I like the Zig Calligraphy markers and the Y & C Calligraphy 2.0, 3.5 and 5.0 markers
  • ·         A few color and one black dual tip brush pens (I like the Tombow dual tip marker pens)
  • ·         Some blank white or light color envelopes
  • ·         Tracing paper or white bond paper pad
  • Note: I will have some of all the above to share.

October 23, 2022

Nancy Henk will present embossing

September 25, 2022

Larry Gabler will present a program on automatic pens and the Bone Alphabet.  Here’s Larry’s description of the program and supply list –

I have learned a lot of tricks on getting automatic pens to write smoothly and on the Bone Alphabet. It takes a lot of pen manipulation, patience and practice but it is worth it.

The supply list, besides paper and pencil, is any automatic pens, preferably medium size like a no. 4 or 3A.   If you don't have an automatic pen, you can use Speedball C-0 or C-1.  As far as ink is concerned a free flowing ink, like Quink.  Thicker inks don't work as well. You can also use walnut ink or use watercolors from any set, like Prang, which is good and very inexpensive. Automatic pens are hard to get to write, so I will show you the trick to get them to write and you will fall in love with them. It works for all metal nibs.

The most important thing to bring is your patience and perseverance. The Bone Alphabet is more difficult to master because there is more pen manipulation.

We are fortunate to have this program presented by Mike Gold, a member of WRC.  In case you don’t know him, from his website at mikegold-lettersarts.com, Mike “worked as a commercial lettering designer for over 30 years, mostly in the social expressions business. But his real passion is exploring the corridors of calligraphy that have been less traveled, the path where words and letters are design elements with which to play with line, shape and form, where creating a visual statement is more important than writing a readable text. In both his professional and personal art, Mike breaks traditional rules to create contemporary, non-traditional work.

Happy Mail: Art of the Decorated Envelope

With Mike Gold

Please join us for a presentation on envelope decoration ideas and techniques. Using ink, paint, brush and broad edge and felt tip markers, metallic pens and common artist tools, you will learn how to create beautiful and expressive mail that will delight your friends and family. There will be some handouts and demonstrations.

Bring envelopes, markers, pens, your calligraphic tools, paint and inks if you would like to join in the fun. If you want to just watch and take pictures, that’s fine too.

Please join your friends in letters for a fun afternoon.

PROGRAM:        Pencil Spencerian Capitals - Presented by Jim Williams
During the Golden Age of Penmanship, roughly 1850 to 1930, the merchant and business world kept their records and corresponded using a script developed by Platt Roger Spencer.   As the years progressed, pen artists, called engrossers, who prepared testimonials, diplomas, and presentation pieces, elevated the capital letters of this script beyond the utilitarian use. In their hands, the capitals became the jewels on a page.

This presentation will have two parts: a PowerPoint on the history and development of the Spencerian Script and a demonstration on how to analyze the beginning, direction, and ending point of a Spencerian Capital Letter.  In the time allotted, it would be impossible to teach this script.  Jim Williams took fifteen week-long Spencerian Sagas during the 1980’s and early 1990’s.  They were taught by Michael Sull, the man who single-handedly reintroduced this lost art to America and the world.

1.    A mechanical pencil with an attached or separate eraser;
2.    Tracing paper if you have it;
3.    At least 10 sheet of College-Ruled note paper;

      4:00-4:45 pm  Business Meeting - all members are encouraged to attend

      What exactly is illumination?  The term commonly describes a manuscript or artifact with lettering that is richly decorated with colorful, 24K gold foil gilded patterns or designs. For our purposes, we will expand the interpretation to include gold and silver foiling, gold and silver leafing, gold and silver painting, and gold and silver inking.  Heathyr will provide many pre-penned letters and patterns in black micron pen on a white acid-free cardstock that will need to be colored and illuminated.  There will be several letters for each participant and Heathyr will bring examples of her own work, a copy of The Book of Kells, and some handouts.  Each participant will complete approximately 3 to 4 letters to take home in this project.

      Supplies: Please bring your favorite coloring medium, for example, colored pencils, gel pens, watercolors, or markers. The different types of gold/silver will be provided by Heathyr, who will also have many gel pens, watercolor pencils and markers available if people need to borrow. Please note: a modest donation is requested for the gold and silver materials that will be provided.

      We will get back to basics with a study of the Foundational Hand designed by Edward Johnson. Johnson is considered the father of modern calligraphy and he based this script on the Ramsey Psalter.

      Whether you have a slant to the right or a backhand slant, the foundational hand teaches structure and order in spacing that results in a distinct rhythm.
      “No book on the mechanics of calligraphy is complete without a reference to Edward Johnston’s Foundational hand and it’s simplicity and integrity.” David Harris in The art of Calligraphy, 1995.  It is designed to be a very clear, round and readable calligraphic font. The wide gestures are ideal for beginners.

She will also demonstrate a sign painter's single-stroke Gothic alphabet. Sue will show us how to blend two or more colors in a single stroke with the flat brush. Time permitting, we will trim a brush.

      Supply List:
      • 1/4" to 3/8" flat brush. Nancy highly recommends the Cotman 666 Winsor and Newton, obtainable at Hobby Lobby, Jo-Ann Fabrics, or Pat Catan's. Or bring whatever you have, but no smaller than 1/4"

      • Prang pan watercolors if you have them, or 2 colors of tube gouache or watercolor

      1:30 p.m.  Black Letter - Lowercase by Sara-Anne Lee.

      Sara-Anne Lee will teach Part 1 of the fundamentals of blackletter, also called Old English, Gothic, or Textura. The hand creates a dense look and features uniform vertical spaces; a good example of the hand can be seen (replicated in movable type) in the Gutenberg Bible. Historically, blackletter was used throughout Western Europe from the 1100s through the 1600s, and in Germany until the 20th century. Sara will bring examples of her work, historical examples, and exemplars, and will demonstrate lowercase and capitals in this two-part program.

      For the class, please bring:
      -  A board to write on
      -  Bleed-proof paper to practice on
      -  Preferred paper for a project (if you wish)
      -  Larger Speedball nibs, such as C1 or C2

      -  Pencil for lining
      -  Preferred ink or gouache
