Pysanky - Ukrainian egg decorating. Linda Hupert, an internationally known artist, will teach us the art of Ukrainian egg decorating. Her eggs are beautiful. Check out her website at www.planetegg.com.
"The art of Pysanky is an ancient art done by writing with beeswax on eggs. The word Pysanka comes from the Ukrainian word pysaty which means to write. The eggs are not painted but written with a stylus filled with beeswax then heated over a flame. The egg is then dipped into the lightest color, usually yellow, and more wax is written on to continue creating the design. The next step, the egg goes into the orange dye, and more wax is written, then dipped into red, and again, wax is written on the parts to be red. The final color is black. Once the egg is dyed black, the egg is then ready to have all that wax melted off. The beauty of the design appears once the wax is completely melted off.
My name is Linda Lishchuk Hupert. I have been decorating Pysanky for over 50 years. I’ve been to festivals all over the East Coast and Michigan and Pennsylvania with my eggs. I was a Guest Artist for 8 years at Walt Disney World Epcot Center for various Festivals they have there. I have taught classes throughout Northern Ohio, and have been affiliated with the Cleveland Museum of Art in their Distance Learning Program. "
I will be demonstrating the process of writing a Pysanka, and also, showing examples of different eggs and explaining the various symbols. This is a program the children and adults of all ages will enjoy. Right now, writing Pysanky has a very special meaning because with each Pysanky written a prayer is said for Peace in Ukraine.
March 26 – Welcome back – show and tell, Pangrams.
Mike Gold will present “The Art of Flourishing”December 4, 2022 (STRONGSVILLE LIBRARY, 18700 Westwood Dr.)
PROGRAM:
Flourish comes from the Latin verb “florare,” which means to bloom. That’s what flourishing does for a lettering design. Flourishes are strokes and decorative lines and elements in and around letters that allow your lettering to blossom and have that extra pizzazz. There are a number of good guidelines to follow when flourishing and we will cover them. But flourishing is an art and your vision and creativity isn’t limited by rules.

Larry Gabler will present a program on automatic pens and the Bone Alphabet. Here’s Larry’s description of the program and supply list –
I have learned a lot of tricks on getting automatic pens to write smoothly and on the Bone Alphabet. It takes a lot of pen manipulation, patience and practice but it is worth it.
The supply list, besides paper and pencil, is any automatic pens, preferably medium size like a no. 4 or 3A. If you don't have an automatic pen, you can use Speedball C-0 or C-1. As far as ink is concerned a free flowing ink, like Quink. Thicker inks don't work as well. You can also use walnut ink or use watercolors from any set, like Prang, which is good and very inexpensive. Automatic pens are hard to get to write, so I will show you the trick to get them to write and you will fall in love with them. It works for all metal nibs.
The most important thing to bring is your patience and perseverance. The Bone Alphabet is more difficult to master because there is more pen manipulation.

We are fortunate to have this program presented by Mike Gold, a member of WRC. In case you don’t know him, from his website at mikegold-lettersarts.com, Mike “worked as a commercial lettering designer for over 30 years, mostly in the social expressions business. But his real passion is exploring the corridors of calligraphy that have been less traveled, the path where words and letters are design elements with which to play with line, shape and form, where creating a visual statement is more important than writing a readable text. In both his professional and personal art, Mike breaks traditional rules to create contemporary, non-traditional work.”
Happy Mail: Art of the Decorated Envelope
With Mike Gold
Please join us for a presentation on envelope decoration ideas and techniques. Using ink, paint, brush and broad edge and felt tip markers, metallic pens and common artist tools, you will learn how to create beautiful and expressive mail that will delight your friends and family. There will be some handouts and demonstrations.
Bring envelopes, markers, pens, your calligraphic tools, paint and inks if you would like to join in the fun. If you want to just watch and take pictures, that’s fine too.
Please join your friends in letters for a fun afternoon.

What exactly is illumination? The term commonly describes a manuscript or artifact with lettering that is richly decorated with colorful, 24K gold foil gilded patterns or designs. For our purposes, we will expand the interpretation to include gold and silver foiling, gold and silver leafing, gold and silver painting, and gold and silver inking. Heathyr will provide many pre-penned letters and patterns in black micron pen on a white acid-free cardstock that will need to be colored and illuminated. There will be several letters for each participant and Heathyr will bring examples of her own work, a copy of The Book of Kells, and some handouts. Each participant will complete approximately 3 to 4 letters to take home in this project.
Supplies: Please bring your favorite coloring medium, for example, colored pencils, gel pens, watercolors, or markers. The different types of gold/silver will be provided by Heathyr, who will also have many gel pens, watercolor pencils and markers available if people need to borrow. Please note: a modest donation is requested for the gold and silver materials that will be provided.

1:30 p.m. Foundational Hand by Myrlin von Glahn
We will get back to basics with a study of the Foundational Hand designed by Edward Johnson. Johnson is considered the father of modern calligraphy and he based this script on the Ramsey Psalter.
Whether you have a slant to the right or a backhand slant, the foundational hand teaches structure and order in spacing that results in a distinct rhythm.
“No book on the mechanics of calligraphy is complete without a reference to Edward Johnston’s Foundational hand and it’s simplicity and integrity.” David Harris in The art of Calligraphy, 1995. It is designed to be a very clear, round and readable calligraphic font. The wide gestures are ideal for beginners.
Recommended supplies to bring:
- college-ruled notebook paper
- Either 1) any edged marker at least 4mm in size
or alternatively, 2) a wide pen nib (e.g., C1 or Speedball 2) and water-soluble ink
Note: some C1 nibs will be available for purchase (60 cents each)
- a #2 pencil and an eraser
- a 45-degree triangle
